Jeanne,

They are both 12.3 megapixel cameras, but the key difference between them is that the D5000 has an vari-angle display that you can move in different directions to view what you are capturing. The Display on the D90 is static. Nevertheless, the resolution on the D90 screen is higher than the resolution of the screen on the D5000. It’s also slightly bigger at 3 inches, as opposed to 2.7 inches on the D5000.
So it’s a trade off, the D5000’s screen offers versatility, it’s also a little brighter and is more visible in the sun. The D90 screen is larger and has a higher resolution. Ultimately, only you can decide which would suit your needs most. They are both fine cameras.

I have a N6006 with several lens and am in the market to purchase a Nikon digital SLR camera. Is a
Nikon ED AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4-5.6D compatible with any digital SLR cameras?
