Fresh from the CES announcement earlier this year, the Panasoninc DMP-BD60 has finally arrived. Only eight months have passed since the CEDIA announcement of Blu-ray decks from Panasonic. Obviously, Panasonic is committed to blu-ray as a format.
The DMP-BD60 looks very similar to the DMP-BD35 and DMP-BD55 announced at CEDIA. Like those players, the DMP-BD60 comes packed with features. It’s Profile 2.0, so no need to worry about getting the latest and greatest, this is it. It has onboard decoding of the lossless audio formats DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. It will also bitstream the lossless audio formats to your receiver or processor, in case you prefer the decoding to be done by your AVR or prepro. It also comes with an SD card slot.
That’s all lovely, but what sets the DMP-BD60 from its predecessors are the network capabilities it has. You now have access to YouTube content, Picasa, The Weather Channel, Bloomberg, and in the near future (Panasonic estimates in May) Amazon on Demand streaming. How sweet is that? I’m a little shocked that wifi was not included, but that is just grasping at straws.
Overall, I think the DMP-BD60 is a fine machine. If you don’t have a Blu-ray player, you have no excuses anymore. The price is right, and the format has finally matured.
