Slider phones have really come into their own in the last few years. We have seen many different iterations of sliders. From the basic slider, to the dual slider, they all have the basic concept of keeping the keypad hidden when not in use, minimizing the profile of the phone. Is this form over function? Maybe, but so what? That’s irrelevant. What is relevant is how well the phone works, so if it has function and style, that’s a-ok with me.
I will give a brief rundown on what I think the top 5 slider phones are. Their prices might vary, but regardless of their pricepoint and their target audience, they represent the best in class in their respective categories.
So without further ado, here are my choices below.
The HTC Touch Pro is the shiznit. Look past the drop dead gorgeous aesthetics, and you will see that this phone offers far more than just pretty looks. A vibrant 2.8″ touchscreen, bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio, wifi, mini usb port and a 3.2MP camera. It has it all. The OS that controls everything is Windows Mobile 6.1. A good all around choice for a slider phone.

Nokia refers to this phone as a “multimedia computer”, and one look at the spec sheet will cement that moniker. With 8GB of built-in flash memory and built-in wifi, access to music, email and web browsing is a cinch. The 2.8″ screen is a beaut. The N95 allows you to surf the web in portrait or landscape mode. It also has a 5MP camera, and GPS. What’s great about the camera is that it can capture video at up to 30 frames a second, and with the addition of software from Qik, you can stream your video live. How sweet is that? Oh yeah, it’s a hell of a phone too, if you want to make phone calls or something with it.

For the more frugal consumer, LG’s got you covered with their KG800 Chocolate. It ain’t edible, but it might as well should be. This tasty morsel delivers style and function. Slim, lightweight and easy on the eyes, the chocolate delivers 200 hours of standby and 6 hours talk time. A 1.3MP camera rounds out this stylish, sleek slider phone.

I blogged about the G1 about 2 months ago here, and just to add an addendum to that post, the G1 is fantastic. It’s a dual slider phone. A full qwerty keyboard, a vibrant 3.2″ screen, GPS with google maps, wifi, built-in mic and speakers, the damn thing owns.

Yeah, yeah, I know, the sidekick is seen as juvenile, but look past that and you’ll see a great multimedia phone. Awesome for texting, the full qwerty keyboard just feels right in the hand. The 1.3MP camera and easy intergration with MMS services make this phone a hit with the younger crowd. So if there is a tween in your life, or maybe you just feel young at heart, then this is a great phone.
So there you have it. These are five slider phones that I think are solid choices. It’s not a definitive list, but I think they are the best choices given a variance of pricepoints, aesthetics and functionality.
