Tony Hawk: Project 8 - A Review

We finally got around to playing Tony Hawk: Project 8 and it was worth the wait. The whole Tony Hawk series has been a trip. This writer’s personal favorite was Tony Hawk Underground 2, but Project 8 gives it some stiff competition. The graphics are better than ever; it’s the first Tony Hawk game that’s been rebuilt for the next-generation of game systems. The goal here is to make it into “Project 8″ — Tony Hawk’s recruiting the 8 best skaters in town and if you complete a bunch of quests you’ll make it in. When you start out you’re ranked 200th, so it’s no easy climb.

The goal system works a little differently in this version of the game. The game is more open-ended than in previous versions, and you can move up from amateur to pro to sick while you compete against real pro skaters. Reaching sick is pretty hard - you have to complete some crazy stunts. Bob Burnquist will ask you to jump from a plane & do tricks in freefall; Bam Margera says you can’t launch from a building & land in a dumpster. The controls are good for both XBox 360 and PS3 versions. Graphics are a little sharper with the PS3 version, but you need the HDMI attached to an HDTV to really see the difference. The Xbox 360 version has 8-person multiplayer, and both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions have different online leaderboards.

Tony Hawk Project 8 is available for PS2 and PS3, the Xbox and Xbox 360 and for the Sony PSP.
