Vista Is Here

Windows Vista Desktop

Today’s the launch day for Windows Vista. To celebrate, we’re going to tell you why we like it so far. The new Aero and Shell systems give you a friendlier user interface & the Sidebar gives you RSS feeds, weather and more right on the desktop. Vista includes Media Center and integrated DVD burning tools. A new app called Windows Mobility Center lets you set up mobile computing more easily. There’s also a new mail tool (no more Outlook Express) and voice recognition. Add it up and you’ve got a Windows OS that gives you maximum convenience.

Microsoft knows that users are more security-conscious, so a whole set of systems were introduced for their peace of mind. User Account Control lets you set permissions on a Vista PC. BitLocker Drive Encryption protects data on a hard drive and it has a built-in spyware filter, Windows Defender. IE7 will have new safety features, like parental controls & phishing filters.

A few interesting business apps have been introduced; two that grabbed our attention were the new WIM format and UNIX/Sun compatibility. WIM (Windows IMage) files keep an image of Vista stored, for easier patching. There’s a new breed of Services For UNIX called “Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications,” plus support for Sun systems’ Network File System (NFS). The biggest surprise with Vista has been its development tools. It comes with the the latest .NET framework (3.0), with a completely new class library that eases up your dev time. It also has new components for vector graphics, a messaging system for Web services, automated workflow and Windows CardSpace, which keeps all transactions under one digital identity. No more wondering who built what!

Windows Vista is everything that serious users have wanted since Windows 98 was launched. It’s got everything Windows users have been asking for, from home users to developers.
