Western Digital Announces the My Book World Edition II

wd

Looks like the gang at Western Digital have been very busy lately. I recently blogged about their WD TV HD media player that didn’t fail to impress us all, especially when you factor the relatively low price.

Not one to rest on their laurels, Western Digital recently announced the My Book World Edition II. It will come in two sizes; 1TB and 2TB.

This isn’t just your average hard drive. It’s a NAS (network attached storage) device. Essentially, it gives you access to all your precious media files from multiple computers.

For you home theater nuts out there, DLNA is probably nothing new to you. If you have one of the newer receivers, then you know what it is, or at least have seen DLNA stickers on your gear. For those that don’t know, DLNA is an acronym for Digital Living Network Alliance. It allows you to stream files to any DLNA certified device. The My Book allows you to stream your media files to any DLNA device, like a PS3 or Xbox 360. It’s capable of doing this because it has a built-in media server.

As if that wasn’t good enough, the My Book also has iTunes server support. All those songs you ripped in iTunes (hopefully in Apple Lossless) can now be streamed to any Mac or Windows PC with iTunes installed. It’s as simple as that.

The My Book World Edition II will be available soon. Keep checking back with us.
