What Santa Rosa Means for You

Good news! There’s some new microprocessor news that is confusing and vague. There will probably be commercials for it, and it will tell you that it will make your life better. It’s called Santa Rosa, it’s by Intel, and it’s for laptops. But what does it all really mean?
Well, first of all Santa Rosa isn’t a new chip. It’s actually a whole way of the guts of a laptop working together, from a chip (an Intel Core 2 Duo), a new chipset, faster WiFi, and new memory. All of this works together to provide you with better performance with less energy consumption, meaning longer battery life. It’s definitely an improvement in technology, and if you’re in the market for a new laptop you’ll want to make sure it’s sporting the Santa Rosa platform.
But does this mean that your current laptop is now obsolete? No, don’t worry. This isn’t anything worth tossing a perfectly good computer out the window over. It’s merely a mark on the wall, showing progress has been made and putting a nice moniker over it so they can sell it. Unless you were planning on upgrading already, don’t worry about it. But if you were looking for an excuse to buy a new computer, well, here you go. Have fun!
