Buying gifts for people isn’t always the easiest thing in the world. It’s the thought that counts they say, but sometimes you have to wonder what the gift giver was thinking. Thankfully, there is no second guessing vinyl purchases as a gift. Provided you know the musical tastes of the person you are shopping for, then this should be a breeze. Of course, you aren’t limited to my selections. The sky is the limit with vinyl, but these albums are the standouts in their respective genres in my opinion. They would all make fine gifts.

For the rock vinyl enthusiast in your life, a great choice would be Horehound by The Dead Weather. I blogged about them here a few months ago. It is a terrific album. Jack White has always been kind to vinyl aficionados over the years, and this album is no different. It’s 180 gram x 2 of pure analog heaven. This would make on hell of a gift.

For the jazz vinyl enthusiast, you need not look further than the 45rpm double lp version of Giant Steps by John Coltrane. Any jazz fan worth their weight in gold already has this masterpiece album, but they have probably not heard a finer sounding version before. This version was mastered directly from the master analog tapes by the legendary Bernie Grundman. Believe me when I tell you, this is the definitive version. It might be a little pricey, but the packaging is first rate. A thick gatefold cover and just an all around gorgeous package makes it more than worth it. Whoever gets this as a gift would be ecstatic.

In the history of blues music, very few duos were as powerful and dynamic as Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. If you have a vinyl enthusiast in your life even remotely interested in blues music, then get Drinkin’ TnT ‘N’ Smokin’ Dynamite for them. Flat out, it’s a fun album with the trademark sound of Junior Well’s Harmonica and Buddy Guy’s immaculate guitar work. The legendary Pinetop Perkins is also on the album. This would be a great gift for any blues fan.

It’s been a tough few years for mainstream rap music. Thankfully, a breath of fresh air has emerged. The fresh air being Wale. In a genre rife with machismo, bravado and street cred, it’s great to see someone come out and focus on tight rhymes and delivery, instead of the same cookie cutter approach many others take. So if you know a someone that is a fan of rap music, then they need to get his double lp, Attention Deficit.
