Who Is Naruto Uzumaki?

One of the great mysteries of life is why certain things that you normally wouldn’t like, suddenly have an appeal. I was thinking about this yesterday, while I watched Naruto. I’m not an anime fan (though I enjoyed Steamboy and Princess Mononoke) and yet something about this show sucked me in. The kid’s voice is annoying, but it’s well-written and the action is entertaining. Plus, the show turned kancho into a martial arts technique. If you know what Kancho is, that gives you a clue about their sense of humor. If you don’t, here ya go.

For those who’ve never seen the show, here’s the breakdown: A boy named Naruto Uzumaki lives in a rural Japanese village where everyone’s a ninja. As a baby, Naruto’s body was used to imprison a nine-tailed demon fox. The show follows Naruto as he goes to ninja school (like all the other kids in the village) and tries to prove himself to his teachers, classmates and the villagers who shunned him. He also grows a fox tail because of the demon in him. It sounds silly, but the stories are clever and the characters are more fleshed out than in other anime series. That might explain why so many games are based on the show. I’m hoping the show comes out on DVD soon, so no one looks at me funny when I insist on putting Cartoon Network on to watch it.
