Seriously, if you consider yourself a fan of sci-fi, you have no excuse for not watching this fantastic BBC series.
The spin-off of the mega-popular British series Doctor Who just aired its third season on BBC America and it did not disappoint.
The show follows the exploits of Captain Jack Harkness, Gwen Cooper and Ianto Jones, three special-ops that investigate extraterrestrial incidents on Earth and scavenge alien technology for their own use. As the opening montage of the show states, they are “outside the government, beyond the police.” It’s a darker, more adult sci-fi series, as opposed to the family friendly Doctor Who. Think of it as a mix between The X-Files and Buffy.
The third season of the series, called “Children of Earth,” aired in the UK two weeks ago and just wrapped up in the US on BBC America. When children all over the world start mysteriously chanting in unison at the same time, the TW team, based out of Cardiff, Wales, set off to investigate. And what they discover will send chills up your spine! The five episode “event”, as it is being called, is bleaker and more sinister than the previous two seasons.
Seasons 1 & 2 of Torchwood are available on DVD and are certainly a good investment if you are planning on watching “Children of Earth”. And while you don’t have to be a Doctor Who viewer to get into Torchwood, it certainly doesn’t hurt. So why not get up to speed on the “Whoniverse” with the most recent Doctors, number 9 & 10?
Torchwood: Children of Earth is available on July 28th on Blu-ray and DVD.
