Why We Like The Zune

Microsoft Zune

You’ve probably seen the commercials for the Microsoft Zune. This video points out one of its more interesting features, but debate on the product seems split. To help people decide, we’re going to outline the things we like about the Zune player.

  • The magnetic headphones. They’re easy to wind up and store, plus when you unplug them the music automatically pauses.
  • Simple controls. The iPod is designed to be simple, but for some it’s overly simple. Zune’s interface is a lot more familiar-looking & easier to use for some.
  • Bigger screen. The Zune’s 3-inch screen offers a little more viewing space than the iPod.
  • WiFi connectivity.
  • Easy photo management and browsing.
  • The radio interface lets you tune in and hear what’s on the AM and FM broadcasts.
  • Finally, there’s “the social.” Your Zune can scan for other Zune users, then wirelessly beam them a song.
  • The different set of colors. Zune comes in black and white, but it also comes in brown. We don’t know anyone who wants a brown MP3 player, but we’ll give ‘em points for doing something different.

The Zune isn’t perfect, though. Engadget didn’t have much to say about the Zune’s software — you can read up on it HERE. Regardless, these are good ideas and we hope Microsoft can be a viable competitor for the iPod. (Not that we dislike the iPod — it’s just that if they have stiffer competition, Apple might start lowering iPod prices. That would be a good thing.)
