As we all scratch our heads and wonder why Nintendo has gone with the Opera internet browser in its new kid on the block, Wii, there might actually be a reason to switch our surfing over from the PC and Mac comfort zones. Releasing 25 Hi-Def streaming videos that explain how to use its most edgy component, the Wii-mote, Nintendo shows once again they have a handle on who its consumer actually is. Everyone who’s heard about this new device is curious how and if it really works, and now we can see for ourselves. What’s more, if we go out and buy Wii, there’s a reason to use it for the internet, as we’ll surely need a few tips and pointers to get us going.
Looking through these video streams, my personal favorite demonstration is for the Orchestra. Something about watching a stranger wave the Wii wand around, conducting a virtual string section tickles me. The Tennis demo made me want to play right away, real strokes and swings effecting the players on the screen. It seems as though this technology, impending/inevitable glitches aside, will be the one to shape the next chapter of gaming history.
Where other gaming companies are left befuddled in the dust of publicity storms, always on the defense, the upcoming Wii release (next fall) has been built up with due diligence. This includes their ability to change the console’s name just in time for this year’s E3 conference, from ‘Revolution’ to Wii, which may have been a simple publicity stunt. Sony, pay attention! Nintendo hasn’t released the pricetag yet, and the only snickers being passed around are at the PS3’s expense. Initial rumors of a street price under $200 for the Wii console have gamers eagerly anticipating a flop Sony release. Sony has been clear the whole time, PS3 will be expensive, and it’s overshadowed their technological developments.
Time will tell which system reigns supreme, but at this point, months before the release dates, it’s a good idea to check in and keep us excited. With these 25 streaming videos, Nintendo has done just that.
Wii!
