Tablets, tablets, tablets. . . These wonderful mobile devices have made everything from reading books to viewing streaming video easy and accessible for all. Sony’s new Tablet S is a great addition to the field. Powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 super chip running Android Honeycomb 3.1, and weighing in at only 1.5lbs, you get lots of power in a lightweight design. The 9.4 inch screen, incorporating TruBlack Display technology, makes watching everything a rich, colorful experience. The screen doesn’t rotate in all directions and the lack of Gorilla Glass is puzzling, but these are minor shortcomings. Speaker placement can lead to some sound loss as they are positioned exactly where I held the unit horizontally. Tablet S possesses a unique wedge design that I found most useful while using the e-reader. This ergonomic grip works for both right and left handed users. Kudos to Sony for not forgetting the southpaws!
This is the first tablet that is Playstation-certified. It also runs emulation software so you can play select Playstation One (like the included Crash Bandicoot!) & PSP games. On-screen controls were responsive and did not interfere with gameplay. Sporting two cameras, the front facing unit is only good for video conferencing, while the 5.0 megapixel rear camera is more than sufficient for the odd photo you might need to take. Pre-loaded with some very good apps, I found the Remote Control app most useful! After a simple setup I had full control of every IR device in my entertainment unit. The Gesture Control System can take some getting used to and doesn’t feel as natural as I would have hoped. With an SD card slot for data transfer and handy MicroUSB port, Sony makes a strong entry in the world of mobile entertainment.
