Xbox 360 Sneaks HD DVD Into Your Living Room

If you have an Xbox 360 already, you’ve got the cheapest possible HD disc player available to you and you probably don’t even know it. While Blu-ray players will set you back around $650 at least and a standalone HD DVD player will be around $600, the newly released Xbox 360 HD DVD drive is a mere $200. It’s a fraction of the price of anything else out there… as long as you already have an Xbox 360.

If you’re set up with an HDTV already, this is the perfect way to try out HD movie discs without dropping an exorbitant amount of money. Your Xbox 360 also has Xbox Live on it, which is now offering HD movie downloads to compliment the new addition to the Xbox family. Microsoft is clearly trying to make the Xbox the centerpiece of your living room with this move. The PS3 has the competing Blu-ray drive built-in, but between the price and the availability issues it currently can’t really compete with the Xbox HD DVD drive. Could this be the factor that tips the scales towards HD DVD over Blu-ray in the current format war? Time will tell.
