Yamaha Crams a Surround Sound Setup into One Box

Yamaha YSP-4000

Having surround sound is great, but it’s such a pain to set up. You’ve got to string wires all over the place, then you need to find places for your satellite speakers that won’t clash with the layout of your living room. Unless you’re a real movie nut, it’s almost not worth it. That’s why we’re pretty lucky that there are some workarounds out there.

One of the best is the new Yamaha YSP-4000. It provides surround sound with only one speaker, using some fancy acoustic tricks to make you feel like you’ve got a half dozen speakers spread around the room. It does this by utilizing 40 individual “beam” drivers that have individual amps and two midbass speakers. These aim sound around the room, making it seem like there’s sound coming from many different directions. And with 40 speakers inside, why settle for a mere 5.1 setup? Try 40.1. Not too shabby, Yamaha. Thanks for helping us cut the wires.
