Microsoft unveiled a new generation of their Zune line of portable media players last night, the creatively-named Zune 2. Featuring a bigger 80GB model and two smaller 4GB and 8GB models, the Zune 2 takes the WiFi abilities of its predecessor to the next level.
The biggest update is the ability to sync your Zune 2 with your computer wirelessly. Yep, no more plugging in your media player to get new music onto it. Simply walking into the room will take care of that for you, which is a simple upgrade that’ll have a huge impact on how you use it. Other updates include a new, touch sensitive “Zune Pad” control scheme, new videos and DRM-free music in the Zune marketplace, and sharing of files other than music between Zunes. If you have an old Zune, the good news is that all these features (other than the Zune Pad) will now work with your old model, including WiFi syncing. It’s a nice change of pace from an industry that’s more likely to force you to buy a new product rather than add new features to an old one.
